PRESS RELEASE: Catholic Schools Office creates new department to serve special needs students
More than 10% of the Catholic school population in South Carolina consists of students with special needs. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston’s Catholic Schools Office recently created Student Success Ministries, a department that serves these students. Edith Cusack has been named its first director.
Cusack has advocated for and educated students with varying disabilities for over 30 years. She will coordinate with South Carolina Catholic schools to reach students with intellectual and developmental challenges.
Cusack founded the REACH Program, a postsecondary four-year certificate program for students with developmental disabilities, which she created and developed at the College of Charleston in 2010. She served as its executive director until joining the Diocese of Charleston.
Cusack holds a Bachelor of Science in special education from the College of Charleston and is an award-winning nationally board-certified special education teacher.
