MEDIA ALERT: Honoring the legacy of the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy
WHAT: Mass honoring the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy
WHEN: Aug. 13, 2023
WHERE: Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, 120 Broad Street in Charleston
WHY: Bishop Jacques Fabre-Jeune, CS, will celebrate Mass to honor the legacy of the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy and their long history of service to the Diocese of Charleston and the people of South Carolina.
The order was founded in 1829 by Most Rev. John England, first bishop of the diocese. In the mid-1800s, the sisters educated students, including freed children of color. In 1882, they opened St. Francis Xavier Hospital, which exists today as Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital.
Moreover, the sisters opened Neighborhood House downtown in 1915 and founded Our Lady of Mercy Community Outreach in 1989 on Johns Island. Both centers are still providing aid to underserved communities today.
